With 365 million litres of Australian wine sold in the country in the last year it looks like Aussies really do appreciate the fruit of the vine and many Australians are now realising that there are ways of making their wine experience even better.
For a long time, serious wine collectors have known that with proper storage in a controlled environment wine can improve with age and become even more enjoyable to drink. But controlled environment storage is now no longer just the domain of the wine connoisseur.
Sunshine Coast wine lovers now have easy access to professional storage facilities to help them get the most from their love of good wine with the opening this week of a brand new state of the art National Storage centre at Corbould Road, Coolum. The centre includes 500 individual, temperature controlled units ideal for cellaring wine, along with 600 traditional storage units of varying sizes.
Mr Andrew Catsoulis, Director of Acquisitions and Development for Brisbane headquartered National Storage, said in the past storage facilities had focused almost entirely on the needs of people wishing to store furniture and household goods.
“But as people’s lifestyles and living space have changed, storage centres are coming into their own as the perfect place to store a vast array of items, from cars and boats, to point of sale material for businesses, and now wine,” Mr Catsoulis said.
He said National Storage, which is one of Australia’s largest domestic and commercial storage businesses, managed 46 centres nationally, with centres in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and the Sunshine Coast now offering climate controlled units, including the latest addition at Coolum.
National Storage now has capacity for storage of over 1 million bottles of wine across these centres.
Mr Catsoulis said the company’s focus on the wine storage business had been enhanced through the recent employment of a dedicated wine industry professional with over 10 years experience in the wine industry, as well as wine education courses for all centre management employees.
“Our decision to include private and secure wine cellars within our centres responds to the increasing number of people across Australia who purchase wine in quantities, or who have purchased wines that will develop in taste and quality after a period of cellaring.
“Up until now the options for keeping this wine, in the absence of a home cellar, has been to store the wine in cupboards, garages or wine racks in the hope that the wine will survive the ravages of a Sunshine Coast summer,” Mr Catsoulis said.

“We welcome those with traditional storage needs at our new Coolum centre and now those with a desire to protect their wines will also find our facilities convenient, accessible and reliable.”
Mr Catsoulis said the Sunshine Coast’s emerging wine industry could also take advantage of the new facilities.
“With a growing number of quality wineries now spread throughout the coast hinterland, the Coolum storage centre provides an ideal location for the bulk storage of wines.
“So whether you have five or 500 cases of wine, National Storage provides the perfect solution to ensure your wine is great to the last drop,” he said.
“Security is a top priority at all National Storage centres and at Coolum we have introduced state of the art systems with individual door alarms, after hours monitoring and surveillance cameras to protect the wide range of valuable and treasured items that people wish to store.”
Mr Catsoulis said National Storage was in the business of providing storage solutions and was continually improving its range of services and supplies to make storage the easy option when space elsewhere was scarce.
“Essentially we are a one-stop shop for all your storage needs from boxes and packing tape, to a helpful list of reminders if you are on the move,” Mr Catsoulis said.
National Storage at Coolum is open six days a week.
